Skokie, Illinois is a village in Cook County, Illinois. The county seat is Chicago. The name “Skokie” comes from a Potawatomi word for marsh. Skokie is a Chicago suburb and form many years Skokie proclaimed itself as the world largest village. The 2010 census listed the population at 64,784. Skokie was originally a German-Luxembourger farming community. Later it was settled by a large Jewish population. At its peak in the mid-1960s, Skokie claimed 58% of its population as Jewish. In recent years, however synagogues and Jewish schools have closed. Skokie is home to the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center.
