The Vermillion County Sheriff’s Department is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of the life and property of all individuals living and working in the area. The department is comprised of two main divisions which are Criminal Investigation and Patrol. The Criminal Investigation Division is headed by Captain Michael Hartshorn. The Patrol Division is under the supervision of Captain E. Deck. The VCSD also has several specialized teams such as the Underwater Search and Rescue, the Special Operations Group, and the All Terrain Vehicle Search and Rescue. The VCSD is headed by Sheriff Patrick Hartshorn.

The Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department is responsible for the care and custody of inmates being held in the county jail. The facility is under the supervision of Jail Administrator Colin Osterbur. It can house up to 420 inmates. All inmates are allowed visitation through the video visitation program provided by the Securus Technologies. All visitors must register an account first before scheduling a visit.
