Roanoke, Illinois is a village in Woodford County, Illinois. The county seat of Woodford is Eureka. The population at the 2010 census was 2,065. Roanoke is part of the Peoria, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. Roanoke has very rich coal veins, and coal mining was important until safety concerns closed the main mine in 1940. A slag pile from that mine still sits on the southern side of the village. At Christmas time, an electric star is placed on top of the pile.
