Jacksonville, Illinois is a city in Morgan County, Illinois. Jacksonville is also the county seat of Morgan County. At the 2010 census the population of Jacksonville was 19,446. Abraha Lincoln visited Jacksonville as an attorney and he acted either as co-counsel or opposing counsel with David A. Smith a Jacksonville resident. Lincoln delivered a strong antislavery speech September 6, 1856 in Jacksonville’s Central Park Plaza. Murals depicting the event is painted on the side of a building in the Plaza. Jacksonville was also a major stopping point on the Underground railroad for slaves escaping to Canada.
The city houses the Illinois College, MacMurray College, The Illinois School for the Deaf, the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired, and the Jacksonville Correctional Center.
