The makeup of the village is 4.9% white, 94.9% Africa American, 0.5% Native Amerian, 0.3# Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander. Riverdale is located along the southern border of Chicago. It is in Southeast Cook County and the total Village square miles is 3.7. Riverdale was originally a farming community, but by the 1850s distilleries, lumber yards, cattle pens, and sugar refineries made their homes in Riverdale. The climate is typical “near Lake Michigan” weather – cold wet winters and hot dry summers.
