Marion is a city in the county of Williamson County and is the county seat. At the 2010 census, the population was 17,193. Marion is part of a dispersed urban area that develop out of the early 20th century coal fields. Marion is the largest retail trade cent in Southern Illinois. The city houses Illinois Star Centre mall as well as the Southern Illinois Miners baseball team. In 1982 one of the largest tornadoes in Illinois history, an F-4, hit the city of Marion and Williams County. Ten people died, and 200 people were injured. The tornado cause approximately $85 million in damages. There is a memorial to the people who perished that day. The city is affectionately known as “The Hub of the Universe.”
