Mahomet was first settled in 1832 on the bank of the Sangamon River. It was the firs community to be established in Champaign County. The name of the city is French for Mohammed and the town believes their founder Daniel T. Porter name it after a tribal chieftain from Connecticut. The City is home to a fantastic library and two Forest Preserves including the lake of the Woods Golf Course.
