Tolono, Illinois is a village in Champaign County, and the county seat is Urbana. At the 2010 census the population was 3,447. The name was fabricated by J.B. Calhoun of the Illinois Central Railroad. He just wanted to use the o vowel three times. Tolono was originally home to many railroad employees and many streets bear the names of the ICs administrative staff. The original homes were small and narrow and filled half lots next to the railroad tracks. The railroad in Tolono was the last stop of Abraham Lincoln’s as he bid farewell to Illinois.
