Manteno, Illinois is a village in Kankakee County, Illinois. The county seat is Kankakee. The populate in 2012 was 9,300. Manteno is a Potawatomi Indian name and might mean “spirit.” Manteno is located about 50 miles south of Chicago’s loop. There is a combination of industrial business and agriculture services in the village. The Farmers Elevator Company of Manteno is the tallest site in town. Manteno has the dubious distinction of being the home of Manteno State Hospital, one of the largest psychiatric hospitals in the country when it opened in 1928. The facility closed I 1985 and its closure combined with the closure of Hilman Hospital brought economic stagnation to the village.
