Pawnee is a village in Sangamon County, Illinois and the county seat is Springfield. The population of Pawnee at the 2009 census was 2,550. Pawnee came into existence because it received a post office in 1854. Originally Pawnee was called Horse Creek, but the name changed since it was fashionable at that time to be Native American. Abraham Lincoln traveled though Pawnee on his way to Springfield, Illinois. He traveled via the Black Diamond Road on the SE side of town.

The Sangamon County Detention facility is a Police Training Institute for the state mandated Basic Correctional Officer Training. Candidates from all over Illinois attend a five-week training course. In addition, inmates are supervised by a staff of 72 Correctional Officers and 27 Control Room Operators. Telephone are in every cellblock and inmates can make as many calls daily as they wish. Personal visits are 25 minutes in length and are monitored. Inmates are allowed up to four visits per week.
Mail can be received and sent. Incoming mail be addressed to the Sangamon Corrections Division 1 Sheriff’s Plaza Springfield, Illinois 62701 and have the inmate’s name clearly listed on the envelope. Inmates have an unlimited account and family and friends may place money on an inmates account daily. Use the kiosk in the main lobby area of the jail facility. You can also send money in the form of a money order sent through the mail. Visit the Jail to access other ways to send money.
