Arthur is a village in Douglas and Moultrie counties in Illinois. The county seat of Douglas is Tuscola and the county seat of Moultrie is Sullivan. The primary street in Arthur, Vine, Street, is the county line. The population is 2,288 and is home to the oldest and largest Amish community in Illinois. Arthur is the 8th largest Amish settlement in the world with 4,410 citizens as of 2017.
Arthur retains its Amish charm and is home to antiques, unique gifts, furniture and Amish made items. There are several “cottage industries” in and around Arthur that feature handmade items from the locals. Historical note of interest: Arthur was built as a railroad switch tract between Paris and Decatur, Illinois. The town burned down and was rebuilt in 1873 with part of the town in Douglas County and the other part in Moultrie County.
