The City of Alton is located on the Mississippi River in Madison County, Illinois. It is about 15 miles north of St. Louis, Missouri. The population of Alton 27,177. The county seat of Madison County is Edwardsville and the largest city is Granite City. Alton is considered part of the Metro-East region of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area. Famous for limestone bluffs along the river and for its role as an abolitionist town during the American Civil War, Alton also the home of the first penitentiary in Illinois. Alton is also the home of jazz musician Miles Davis.
