Blue Island, Illinois – Information
Blue island is a city in Cook County, Illinois. It is located about 16 miles south of Chicago’s Loop and has a population of 23,706. Chicago is the County Seat and there are 23,706 people living in Blue Island. Blue Island is an important commercial center in the south Cook County region. In the late 1800s Blue Island was the brick making capitol of the world. Blue Island has been the point of entry for many immigrants. In 1850 most of Blue Island’s population was foreign-born or children of foreign-born residents. Significant groups came from Poland, Italy, Mexico and Sweden. The city is one of eleven areas in Illinois designated by the White House as a Preserve America community. There are many homes on the National Register of Historic Places. Blue Island Victory was an armed cargo ship built during WWII to transport troops and supplies. There were 550 built and 218 were named after American cities. The ship was scrapped in 1972.
The city is governed by a mayor, and the current mayor is Domingo Vargas of the Blue Island Independent Party.
