Carbon Cliff, Illinois is a village in Rock Island County, Illinois. The county seat is Rock Island, Illinois. The population of Carbon Cliff is 2,134. It is in the southern part of Hampton Township. Caron Cliff was a coal mining center in the mid-19th century and the town was named for the man coal mines dotting the bluff west of the town. Carbon Cliff mines were the earliest mines to be worked on the west side of the Rock River. Coal was plentifully for many year, but by the beginning of the 20th century, the coal supply ran out. Pottery became an industry in Caron Cliff because of the strata of potter’s clay outcropping along the coal seams. A pottery was build, but the brick and clay factory burnt down.
