Charleston, Illinois is a city and the county seat of Coles County, Illinois. The population is 21,838 and is home to Eastern Illinois University. As with other cities in Illinois, Charleston was first home to Native Americans. In the 1810s and 20s Indians bean harassing surveying crews and this escalated a series of skirmishes between Indians, settlers, and the Illinois Rangers. After the 1932 Black Hawk War most of the Natives were driven out of the area now known as Charleston.
Abraham Lincoln was a frequent visitor to the Charleston area. On September 18, 1858, one of the Lincoln-Douglas debates was held in Charleston, Illinois. Thomas Lincoln, Abraham’s father, had a log cabin near Charleston. This cabin has been restored and is open to the public. The Lincoln farm is now a living history museum.
