Lombard is a village in DuPage County and the county seat is Wheaton. Lombard is a suburb of Chicago. At the 2010 census the population in the village was 43,395. On April 6, 1891, Ellen A. Martin led a group of women to the voting place at the general store. Ellen insisted the three male election judges allow the women to vote. The men were so surprised, one had a spasm and the other feel backwards into a barrel of flour. They would not allow the women to vote. A county judge was asked to decide. He agreed the women could vote. Ellen Martin became the first woman in Illinois to vote. The 19th Amendment was not passed until 1920.
