Riverton Illinois is a village in Sangamon County, Illinois. The county seat of Sangamon is Springfield. At the 2010 census the population was 3,455. Originally Riverton was a ferry crossing located just south of Riverton on the Sangamon River. Abraham Lincoln, John Hanks and John D. Johnston came to Sangamon County via the Sangamon River by canoe to Riverton. How long they stayed is unknown. Riverton got it name in the 1870s, was one of the notorious hideouts of Al Capone. Even earlier, Jesse James spend the night in Riverton while heading to Montana for a bank heist.
