St. Charles, Illinois is a city in DuPage and Kane Counties in Illinois. The county seat of DuPage is Wheaton, and the county seat of Kane county is Geneva. According to the U.S. census of 2012, the city has a population of 33,327. The city’s slogan is Pride of the Fox (Fox River). A city park that overlooks the Fox river is dedicated to the native Amerian Pottawatomie tribe. St. Charles was home to several “stations” of the Underground Railroad during the Civil War. Many homes had tunnels and false doorways to accommodate escaping slaves. There was an open abolitionist group named the Kane County Anti-Slavery Society founded in 1842 with a headquarters in the local blacksmith shop. The Illinois Youth Centre St. Charles, a juvenile correctional facility is in St. Charles. It opened in 1904.
