Brighton, Illinois is a village located in Macoupin County, Illinois. The county seat is Carlinville. The village has a total population of 2,254 and the current mayor is Michael Roberts. Brighton is a small village that dates to the 19th century. Settlers began moving to the Illinois prairie and turning it into productive farmland. Brighton also boasts a five-star historic museum. There are three restaurants, two grocery stores and one traffic signal in Brighton. It does straddle two counties, Macoupin and Jersey Counties. Make sure you go to the Betsey Ann Picnic, in Brighton. Burgoo soup is the main dish.  At one-time there was an Old American Civil War prisoner of war camp controlled by the Union.

The Sheriff is the chief law enforcement officer of Macoupin county and is also the administrator for the county jail. The Sheriff also investigates all crimes of violence and fraud, recovers stolen property and provides service to the unincorporated areas of Macoupin County. The Sheriff maintains a record of all traffic accidents, investigations and arrests, and complaints. He serves warrants issued and manages all prisoners confined to the County Jail.
