Carbondale, Illinois is a city in Jackson County, Illinois and the county seat is Murphysboro. The population of Carbondale as of the 2010 census was 25,902.  It is in the Southern Illinois region known as “little Egypt.” Carbondale is a major transportation city, and 96 miles southeast of St. Louis, Missouri. Carbondale is home to the main campus of Southern Illinois University. The city experienced the longest period of the eclipse. Carbondale is also one of the few cities in the direct path of the eclipse.
