The village was originally called Butler’s Point when it was settled in 1820. James Butler started a cemetery in Catlin and called it “God’s Acre”. This is the reported to be the earliest cemetery in the country. The village is a family-friendly community and the school system is one of the premier education systems in east-central Illinois. The Village of Catlin is a municipally and the Mayor is Butch Schmink.
