The county seats are Joliet in Will County and Morris in Grundy County.  Coal City is a fringe town of the Chicago metropolitan area and the population is 5,587. In 2015 and #F3 tornado hit Coal City and damaged and destroyed a number of businesses and homes. Winds reach 160 miles per hour which made this tornado the most powerful tornado it hit the regions since 1990. The film, Planes, Trains & Automobiles was partially filmed in Coal City. The city regularly celebrates community projects such as Arbor Day, Spring Clean Up, and a community wide garage sale.

The Will County Adult Detention Facility offer safe and humane detention of those waiting for trail or serving criminal sentences. The Detention facility is not a correctional facility and rehabilitation is not a function or goal. The facility does encourage inmates to participate in program that help them avoid re-incarceration.
