The city is named after decorated German war hero Johann de Kalb who died during the American Revolutionary War. There are 44 parks and recreation facilities in DeKalb. Northern Illinois University was founded in Dekalb and has a total enrollment around 20,000 which makes NIU the third largest campus in Illinois. The city is about 65 miles west of downtown Chicago and 30 miles southeast of Rockford, Illinois. The Kishwaukee River flows through the city of Dekalb.
