Elwood houses the Mildewing National Tallgrass Prairie, a prairie reserved operated by the U.S. Forest Service. It is located on the site of the former Joliet Army Ammunition Plant near Elwood and was established in 1996. In1999, a 982-acre cemetery, Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, was dedicated and provides 400,000 burial spaces. The village is a quaint an vibrant community and located five miles south of Joliet.
