It is a North Shore community that adjoins Lake Michigan and is also the home of Northwestern University. Evanston is the birthplace of Tinkertoys and one of the locations that originated the ice cream sundae. Notable: because of Evanston’s activism and often left-of-center politics, it is sarcastically or humorously referred as “The People’s Republic of Evanston.”
