Godfrey, Illinois is a village In Madison County, Illinois. The county seat of Madison County is Edwardsville. At the 2010 census, the populations was 17,982. The village is named for Captain Benjamin Godfrey. Godfrey arrived in the area in 1832. A few years later in 1938, the Monticello Female Seminary (later renamed Monticello College) was established. Captain Godfrey who had eight daughters, was a supporter of higher education for women. Godfrey made a large donation of funds and land for the college. Monticello was a two-year college for women until the campus was sold in 1970 and changed to Lewis and Clark Community College.
Nearby in Godfrey is the mouth of the Missouri River, and starting point for the Lewis & Clark expedition.
