Granite City is a city in Madison County Illinois and the County Seat is Edwardsville. At the 2010 census, Granite City had a population of 29,849. Granite City is the second largest city in the Metro East and Southern Illinois regions. The city was founded in 1896 by the Niedringhaus brothers. They established Granite City as a steel making company town to produce kitchen utensils made to look like granite. Today, there are several large manufacturing corporations in the city. These include U.S. Steel, Precoat Metals, Capri-Sun, Kraft Foods, and American Steel.
