The city was incorporated in 1853 and is situated along the Illinois and Michigan Canal. Part of the canal runs through Lockport including the remains of the canal’s Lock No. 1. The canal right of way is the Illinois and Michigan National Heritage Corridor. Lockport is considered the city tht made Chicago famous. The growth and development of Chicago was due to the canal that linked the Great Lakes to the Illinois and Mississippi rivers.
