New Athens, Illinois is a village in St. Clair County, Illinois. The county seat is Belleville. At the 2010 census the population was 2,054. The city is known for water sports and annual boat races and fishing derbies. It is the home of the Peabody River King Conservation Area. New Athens is in the Metro East area of St. Louis and is home to Mound City Brewery (until the 1950s). Baseball is a major sport in the area. New Athens is also notorious for housing the Sturdivant Gang, 19th Century counterfeiters.
