Oak Forest, Illinois

Oak Forest, Illinois is a suburb about 24 miles south-southwest of downtown Chicago. It is in Cook County and the county seat is Chicago. The population at the 2010 census was 27,962. Just like many cities and villages near Chicago, Oak Forest began as part of the railroad. Oak Forest’s railroad history included a whistle stop n the forest known as the Cooper’s Grove Stand of Timber. Oak Forest was also the site of a second county poor farm and infirmary near the Rock Island railroad. A railroad spur was built off the Rock Island railroad line to the hospital site. After its opening the facility housed 2,000 people suffering from poverty, mental illness, alcoholism and other problems. The residents helped maintain farmlands around the facility. By 1932, the Infirmary housed more than 4,000 patients and many of them had tuberculosis. Today, Oak Forest is a nice suburb of Chicago nestled in a picturesque forest.
