Zion, Illinois is a city in Lake County, Illinois, and the county seat is Waukegan. At the 2010 census, the population was 22,866. The city was founded in 1901 by John Alexander Dowie. He built the Zion Tabernacle of the Christian Catholic Apostolic Church which, as the time, was the only church in town. It burned down in 1937. Zion is the closest city to South Beach within Illinois Beach State Park. In WWI and WWII, the beach served as a rifle range for the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. In 2000, the area was officially designated as the Cullerton Complex in honor of William J. Cullerton, Sr., war hero and conservationist.

The mission of the Zion Police Department is to maintain peace and good order; protect life and property; prevent and investigate crime; and respond to community needs. To touch our community in a practical, effective, and collaborative way, designed to augment the purely reactive, incident driven model of the past.
There are three components to the Zion PD program: traditional; pro-active; non-enforcement outreach. With the community and the police department, we can improve the quality of life, through community empowerment, partnership, and creative problem solving.
